When the sun sets, your outdoor space doesn't have to fade into darkness. With thoughtful lighting, your landscape can come alive with ambiance, safety, and style. Whether you're working with a sprawling backyard, a cozy patio, or a modest garden, the right lighting can elevate your outdoor area into a warm, inviting haven. Here are some inspiring lighting ideas to help you design your perfect nighttime retreat.

1. Pathway Lighting for Safety and Style
Pathway lights not only guide your steps in the dark but also add charm and definition to your garden or yard. They create a soft glow that highlights the natural flow of your space.

Ideas to try:
 • Solar-powered stake lights along walkways or garden borders
 • Low-voltage LED bollard lights for a modern touch
 • Recessed ground lights for a minimalist, seamless look

2. Uplighting to Highlight Trees and Architectural Features
Uplighting creates drama by casting light upward onto trees, walls, or sculptures, adding depth and dimension to your landscape.

Ideas to try:
 • Place spotlights at the base of large trees to showcase their canopy
 • Use wall-mounted lights to highlight textures of stone or brick facades
 • Angle lights upward at garden art or water features for a bold focal point

3. String Lights for a Cozy, Festive Atmosphere
String lights instantly add a warm, whimsical vibe. Perfect for patios, pergolas, or between trees, they create a soft canopy of light that’s ideal for entertaining.

Ideas to try:
 • Hang café-style string lights across a dining area or backyard
 • Use fairy lights in trees or shrubs for a magical, twinkling effect
 • Wrap string lights around posts, fences, or trellises for subtle illumination

4. Step and Deck Lighting for Safety and Elegance
Lighting your steps and deck areas not only prevents accidents but also adds a sleek and modern design element.

Ideas to try:
 • Install recessed LED lights into stair risers or deck boards
 • Add strip lights under railings or seating for a soft, indirect glow
 • Use motion-sensor step lights for functionality and energy savings

5. Lanterns and Sconces for Ambient Lighting
Wall-mounted sconces and portable lanterns bring style and ambient light to outdoor spaces, much like table lamps do indoors.

Ideas to try:
 • Choose vintage-style lanterns for a rustic or coastal feel
 • Install modern sconces on exterior walls for clean, architectural lines
 • Use battery-operated or solar lanterns to accent seating areas and garden paths

6. Water Feature Lighting for Tranquil VibesWhy it works: Lighting up ponds, fountains, or waterfalls can create a serene and luxurious atmosphere. The interplay of light and water adds movement and sparkle to your space.

Ideas to try:
 • Submersible LED lights in ponds or fountains
 • Spotlights angled at cascading water for dramatic shadows
 • Colored lighting to enhance the mood (use sparingly for best effect)

Outdoor lighting isn't just about visibility—it's about creating an experience. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, enjoying a quiet evening, or simply showcasing your garden's best features, the right lighting can transform your space into something truly special. Experiment with layers of light, mix functional and decorative elements, and most importantly—have fun with it!

If you’re looking to create a beautiful yard without the constant upkeep, you’re not alone. For homeowners and gardening enthusiasts in Central Ohio, choosing low-maintenance plants is a smart way to enjoy a thriving landscape with minimal effort. Thanks to Central Ohio’s USDA Hardiness Zones 6a–6b, you have plenty of options for easy-care perennials and native plants that flourish in our climate.

Whether you’re a beginner gardener or just want more time to relax and less time weeding, here are five of the best low-maintenance plants for Ohio gardens.

1. Coneflower (Echinacea)
Why it’s great: A favorite among Ohio native plants, coneflowers bring long-lasting color and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. These hardy perennials are perfect for low-maintenance landscaping in Central Ohio.
 • Sunlight: Full sun
 • Soil: Well-drained
 • Bonus: Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant

2. Hosta
Why it’s great: Hostas are shade-loving plants ideal for areas under trees or on the north side of your home. With minimal care, they offer lush, attractive foliage season after season.
 • Sunlight: Partial to full shade
 • Soil: Moist, well-drained
 • Bonus: Virtually carefree once established

3. Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia)
Why it’s great: These golden blooms are tough, long-lasting, and perfect for sunny beds. They’re one of the best easy perennials for Central Ohio gardens.
 • Sunlight: Full sun
 • Soil: Adaptable, tolerates clay
 • Bonus: Attracts butterflies and birds

4. Daylilies (Hemerocallis)
Why it’s great: With vibrant blooms and strong adaptability, daylilies are excellent for low-maintenance flower beds in Ohio. They spread easily and return every year with little intervention.
 • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade
 • Soil: Most types, including clay
 • Bonus: Pest and disease resistant

5. Sedum (Stonecrop)
Why it’s great: Sedum is a drought-tolerant ground cover that thrives in poor soil and full sun. Ideal for Central Ohio rock gardens or borders, it’s virtually indestructible once established.
 • Sunlight: Full sun
 • Soil: Well-drained
 • Bonus: Attracts pollinators and helps control erosion

Final Tips for Central Ohio Gardeners:
 • Mulch smart: Mulch helps conserve moisture and keep weeds at bay—an easy win for low-maintenance landscaping.
 • Water wisely: Once established, these plants need very little watering.
 • Plant local: Native Ohio plants like coneflowers and black-eyed susans are more resilient to local pests and weather patterns.
By choosing the right plants, you can enjoy a colorful, hardy landscape that requires less work and more enjoyment. These low-maintenance landscaping ideas are perfect for busy homeowners, beginner gardeners, or anyone who wants a hassle-free outdoor space.

<![CDATA[How to Properly Maintain a Paver Patio]]>Thu, 17 Apr 2025 14:57:38 GMThttp://lorenzlawnlandscape.com/blog/how-to-properly-maintain-a-paver-patioSome people have misconceptions about paver patios. They think paver patios are difficult to maintain. People think that you’ll have to deal with weeds growing between cracks, and pavers coming out of place. The truth, however, is if your patio was properly installed, a paver patio is very low maintenance. Pavers won’t move, and weeds won’t come up. At Lorenz, we follow the best industry practices to ensure that your patio is properly installed. Check out our youtube channel for information on how we install patios.

To properly maintain your patio, the main thing is to keep it clean. Keep leaves and debris off of it on a regular basis, so it stays clean. You can lightly pressure wash it from time to time, but make sure it’s on a low setting so the sand doesn’t come out of the joints. Polymeric sand is what keeps the pavers in place.

Occasionally, drainage issues might cause settling with pavers, and those may need to be addressed.

Every 2-5 years, we recommend re-sanding your patio. Polymeric sand needs to be replaced more often in shady areas than in the sun. In order to re-sand your patio, start with pressure washing it really well. Make sure to get all of the polymeric sand out of the joints. Let it dry, and then reinstall the polymeric sand. When doing this, it’s also a great time to reseal your patio. That’s it!

If re-sanding and sealing your patio sounds intimidating, reach out to us. We are happy to help, and provide patio maintenance every few years for many of our customers.

As spring approaches, it’s time to give your yard the attention it deserves. Spring is a great time to refresh your landscape, prepare your hardscape, and set the stage for a great outdoor space. Here's a list of ways you can get your yard ready for warmer weather.

1. Clean Up Your Yard
Winter can leave behind debris, dead leaves, and broken branches. Freshen up your spring landscaping and:
 • Rake up leaves and remove debris from your lawn and garden beds.
 • Prune dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs.
 • Clear out gutters and drains to prevent water buildup.

2. Prepare Your Garden Beds
Spring is the best time to start planting flowers, shrubs, and vegetables. Prepare your garden and:
 • Remove weeds and old mulch from garden beds.
 • Turn and enrich the soil with compost or organic matter.
 • Apply a fresh layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
 • Choose seasonal flowers and plants that thrive Ohio.

3. Inspect and Maintain Hardscaping
 • Check your patios, walkways and retaining walls and make necessary repairs to cracks or shifting in pavers, bricks, or stones
 • Pressure wash moss or algae buildup.
 • Reseal worn-out sealant on patios and driveways.

4. Plan Your Spring Planting
Spring is an excellent time to introduce new plants to your landscape. Consider the type of flowers and plants you want to add to your landscape. Some factors to consider are plant maintenance, color, and function.

5. Install or Upgrade Outdoor Features
Take your outdoor space to the next level by adding:
 • A fire pit or outdoor fireplace for cozy spring evenings.
 • Landscape lighting to highlight walkways and garden beds.
 • A new patio or pergola to create a functional outdoor living area.
 • Water features like fountains or ponds for a tranquil touch.

6. Schedule Regular Maintenance
Keeping your yard in top shape requires ongoing care. Stay on top of it and:
 • Set up a mowing and edging schedule.
 • Check for pests and treating problem areas early.
 • Regularly prune and shape shrubs and trees.

7. Enjoy Your Outdoor Space!
Once your spring landscaping is complete, it’s time to enjoy your outdoor space! Host a backyard gathering, relax on your newly refreshed patio, or simply take in the beauty of your well-maintained yard.

<![CDATA[Considerations for Choosing a Company]]>Thu, 17 Oct 2024 01:33:28 GMThttp://lorenzlawnlandscape.com/blog/considerations-for-choosing-a-companyWhen choosing a company to provide a service to your home or business, there are many different things to take into consideration. For many people, the deciding factor is money. People want to choose the cheapest quote and spend the least amount of money possible for the project. While that may initially seem like a good idea, you’ll have more money in your pocket in the short term, low price does not always mean the work will be quality. Long term, quality work should come before price. Many people who skimp on quality for a lower price come to regret it later. They may even end up paying more for a service to be repaired or altered after the initial project is completed.

Experience can make a big difference in the overall end result of your project. See how long the company has been in business. Read some reviews. Figure out what people are saying and if the reviews are positive. Check out a company’s website, and see if they have photos of work they have done. If the company has been in business for a while, chances are they have learned a lot over the years. They know what works and what doesn’t. A company who has been in business for a while will provide a standard of work that is greater than someone who is just starting out.

A contractor’s reliability is also important. Do they respond to messages in a timely manner? Do they actually do what they say they will do? If the answers to those questions are no, then move on to someone else. Check the reviews, and see if anyone said anything about the company’s reliability.

Finally, make sure that the crew is knowledgeable. Someone can be a good sales person, and sell you the job. But it’s imperative that the person who is actually completing the work knows what they’re doing. A company that strives to train their staff well cares about the quality of work provided to its customers.

Here at Lorenz, we probably won’t be the lowest quote you receive. We have high standards. So we provide the best product for you, the best craftsmanship for you, and have great employees. We take the time to train our staff, and make sure they are up to date with the industry’s best practices. All of those things cost us money, which will in turn cost you money. But we refuse to cut corners on quality! Which in the end, will actually end up saving you both time and money.

Here at Lorenz, we’ve learned a lot over the years. We have been in business since 2008. We have many years of hands-on experience. We’ll bring that expertise to your project. We have learned, and continue to learn, the ins and outs of the industry to provide the best for our customers. You’ll see that in our reviews. You’ll see that on our website, and through the awards we have won. We’re personable, reliable, and easy to work with. Take the time to check out our reviews, and check out our website. See what our customers have to say. You won’t be disappointed!]]>
